Why Your Twin Flame Can Hurt You So Much

One of the hardest things to understand about the Twin Flame phenomenon is how someone who is literally another incarnation of your own Soul can hurt you so deeply. Through my work at New World Allstar, I hear versions of this question constantly. Someone is rejected, humiliated, blocked, discarded, lied to, treated coldly, or pushed away in a way that feels almost impossible to reconcile with the idea that Twin Flames are one Soul. The mind naturally asks, “If this person is really me at the level of Soul, how could they possibly do something like this to me?”

I understand why that question feels so disturbing. If the two of you are the same Soul, it seems logical to assume that your Twin Flame should somehow recognize you as themselves. Maybe not intellectually, but at least somewhere deep inside. It seems as though they should sense what the connection is, treat it with reverence, and instinctively understand that harming you means harming another incarnation of the same Soul.

That is not what I have observed. After more than eight years of studying the Twin Flame phenomenon and working with more than 8,000 people through New World Allstar, the model I use is very clear on this point: the conscious Twin and the unconscious Twin do not experience the connection in the same way. You are the conscious, creative incarnation. Your Divine Masculine is the unconscious, reactive incarnation. You consciously encounter the awakening, while they respond within the unified system without necessarily understanding what that system is. Once that distinction is clear, a great deal of behavior that otherwise seems almost impossible to understand begins to make sense.

Same Soul Does Not Mean Same Conscious Awareness

The first mistake is assuming that because two people are the same Soul, both personalities must consciously know it. They do not. The Divine Masculine does not necessarily walk around thinking, “That person is another incarnation of my own Soul.” They do not need to understand Twin Flames, reincarnation, the push-pull, spiritual awakening, non-duality, or any of the other ideas the conscious Twin has been forced to confront.

That is precisely why the two sides of the system behave so differently. The conscious Twin—the Feminine—is the incarnation that becomes aware of the connection and undergoes the forced, involuntary spiritual awakening. The Masculine remains the unconscious, reactive Twin. They respond to the system without consciously understanding the metaphysical structure behind it, which means you cannot assume that your understanding of the connection exists somewhere inside their personality in exactly the same form.

This is also why temporary returns can confuse people so badly. Your Twin Flame may come back for a while, become affectionate, agree that the relationship is extraordinary, and even say things that sound as though they finally understand everything. You may think, “See? They know. Deep down, they’ve always known.” Then they run again and suddenly deny the whole thing.

That does not necessarily mean they were consciously suppressing some permanent spiritual knowledge. In many cases, they were responding to the present situation. The conscious Twin reads that temporary response as proof of shared awareness, but the Masculine remains what they have always been within the unified system: the responding incarnation. I describe the distinction very simply in my work at New World Allstar: you are the conscious, creative Twin, while they are the unconscious, reactive Twin. You cause; they respond.

That functional difference matters enormously when their behavior becomes painful because it removes one of the assumptions that makes the pain feel so incomprehensible. They are not necessarily standing there consciously understanding that you are another incarnation of their own Soul and then deliberately deciding to violate some sacred spiritual bond. They may simply be behaving through the personality, conditioning, fears, and psychology of that incarnation.

Your Twin Flame Can Behave Like a Completely Different Person

People often hear the phrase “same Soul” and imagine sameness at the personality level, but the personality is not the Soul. The personality is shaped by a particular incarnation: family, culture, trauma, social conditioning, fears, attachments, moral development, temperament, relationships, successes, failures, and everything else that builds a human psychological identity over time.

If your Twin Flame is another incarnation of your Soul, then they are not supposed to be a psychological clone of you. They are another human expression of the same underlying Soul. That means they can behave in ways that feel completely foreign to your present personality. They may be more fearful, more defensive, more selfish, less emotionally mature, more avoidant, more impulsive, more conventional, more materialistic, more aggressive, or simply very different from you.

The shared Soul does not erase the individuality of the incarnation. This is where many people begin confusing spiritual identity with personality compatibility. They reason, “If we are the same Soul, they should think like me, understand like me, love like me, and behave like me.” But if every incarnation reproduced the same personality, reincarnation itself would make very little sense. Different incarnations exist precisely because the Soul moves through different human experiences.

This distinction becomes especially important when the conscious Twin is further along in the awakening process. You may be studying consciousness, meditating, questioning the ego, learning non-duality, and trying to understand the spiritual mechanics of what happened to you. Meanwhile, the other incarnation may be completely uninterested in any of that. Same Soul does not mean synchronized personality development, synchronized spiritual vocabulary, or synchronized conscious understanding.

Your Twin Flame’s Bad Behavior Does Not Make the Connection Fake

This is another painful misconception. Someone says, “If this person were really my Twin Flame, they could never treat me this way.” But that assumes Twin Flame identity is demonstrated by good behavior, and it is not. A Twin Flame is not a spiritual reward for good conduct, and Twin Flame identity is not determined by whether the other person is kind enough, emotionally mature enough, faithful enough, enlightened enough, or psychologically compatible enough to fit your ideal of what a spiritual partner should look like.

If Twin Flames are another incarnation of the same Soul, then your Twin Flame is capable of the full range of human behavior available to any incarnation. That includes behavior you dislike, behavior you find shocking, and sometimes behavior that is genuinely toxic. I have observed cases in which, when the responding Twin needs to create distance, they do things that are harsh, immature, or completely disproportionate because they are reacting to pressure within the system through an ordinary human personality.

Understanding why that can happen does not make the behavior acceptable. It makes the behavior intelligible, and those are not the same thing. One of the biggest mistakes people make in spiritual communities is confusing explanation with justification. A spiritual framework should help us see more clearly, not require us to pretend harmful behavior is suddenly good because we can describe the mechanics underneath it.

The Push-Pull Can Produce Ugly Human Behavior

This is where the unified-system mechanics become important. Twin Flames function as one system. The conscious, proactive Twin pushes, while the unconscious, reactive Twin pulls. When the conscious Twin becomes increasingly focused on the other incarnation—obsessing, chasing, monitoring, waiting, trying to control the outcome—the pressure in the system rises. The responding Twin compensates by pulling away.

Usually people imagine that pulling away should look clean and polite. Sometimes it does. Sometimes they simply create distance, stop communicating, say they need space, or become emotionally unavailable. But human beings are messy, and the responding incarnation is still operating through a human personality. That means the mechanism can express itself through behavior that is immature, harsh, or cruel.

They may say something designed to make you back off. They may push you away dramatically. They may humiliate you or behave in a way that seems completely disproportionate to what happened. The mechanical pressure in the system can explain why the distancing response appears, while the personality determines how that response gets expressed in the physical relationship.

That is an important distinction because the mechanism explains the response without morally endorsing the conduct. The fact that the system is compensating does not transform cruelty into kindness or disrespect into wisdom. It simply helps explain why the behavior may emerge in a pattern that ordinary relationship psychology alone does not fully account for.

Understanding Is Not the Same Thing as Accepting Mistreatment

This distinction needs to remain absolutely clear because spiritual explanations can become dangerous when people use them to rationalize abuse. If someone treats you badly, you are allowed to recognize that they treated you badly. If they humiliate you, you do not have to pretend humiliation is love. If they lie to you, you do not have to spiritualize dishonesty. If they become abusive, controlling, threatening, or destructive, you do not have to stay because “they are my Soul.”

Being the same Soul does not eliminate human responsibility. The incarnation still acts, still makes choices, and still lives within human relationships where boundaries matter. You can understand that the push-pull contributed to the behavior and still decide that the behavior is unacceptable. You can recognize that the Masculine is reacting within the unified system and still refuse to participate in a toxic interaction.

You can also recognize your Twin Flame as another incarnation of your Soul and still walk away from the human situation in front of you. That is not spiritual failure. It is discernment. Understanding the larger framework should make you less confused about what is happening, not more willing to tolerate anything simply because the person occupies a spiritually significant role in your life.

Your Twin Flame May Be Another Incarnation of You

This is where the larger reincarnation model changes the entire discussion. The explanation I use through New World Allstar is that your Twin Flame is another incarnation of your own Soul. Twin Flames are not two halves of a Soul that split apart. They are two incarnations of the same Soul appearing within the same period of physical time.

Within that model, the relationship becomes far stranger—and far more interesting—than the ordinary romantic story people try to impose on it. You are not merely looking at another person who resembles you spiritually. You are looking at someone you have been. Every time you watch your Twin Flame behaving, you are essentially watching a replay of another incarnation of the same Soul living through experiences that, from that incarnation’s perspective, were once completely first-person.

That reframes painful behavior in a way ordinary relationship psychology cannot. Instead of asking only, “How could they do this to me?” another question becomes possible: “What does it mean that my own Soul has expressed itself through a human being capable of doing this?” That question does not excuse the behavior, but it places the behavior inside a much larger understanding of identity.

You Have Not Been a Perfect Angel in Every Incarnation

This is where reincarnation gets uncomfortable. People love past lives when the past life makes them feel special. Somebody was Cleopatra, somebody was royalty, somebody was a priestess, somebody was a famous spiritual teacher, and apparently everyone spent every incarnation doing something historically glamorous.

But if reincarnation is real, then across many lifetimes you have not only occupied impressive or admirable roles. You have lived ordinary lives, difficult lives, confused lives, selfish lives, loving lives, destructive lives, compassionate lives, fearful lives, and everything in between. Maybe you were a handmaid, a housewife, a factory worker, a miner, a merchant, a farmer, a criminal, a narcissistic person, a saint, a loving parent, or simply somebody whose life never became historically significant at all.

The Soul gathers experience through human incarnation. That means your present personality does not get to look backward across an enormous reincarnational history and declare, “I could never have been like that.” Maybe you could. Maybe you were. And in the Twin Flame phenomenon, you may be looking directly at another incarnation that embodies traits your present personality finds almost impossible to accept.

That is one reason the encounter can become so psychologically intense. The Twin Flame does not merely confront you with another human being. They may confront you with a version of your own Soul expressed through a personality you would never voluntarily choose to identify with.

The Twin Flame May Show You a Version of Yourself You Would Rather Reject

This is one of the most fascinating implications of the entire model. The conscious Twin often feels morally or spiritually superior to the runner because they are the one doing the spiritual work. They meditate, study, understand the Twin Flame system, learn about non-duality, and consciously engage with the awakening. The Masculine may seem completely unconscious by comparison.

Then the Masculine behaves badly, and the conscious Twin thinks, “I could never do something like that.” But if that person is another incarnation of your Soul, the situation becomes profoundly humbling. Maybe that is exactly the kind of thing another version of you did. Maybe your Soul has already inhabited that personality structure. Maybe you have been the avoidant one, the selfish one, the cruel one, the frightened one, the person who pushed someone away, or the person who could not recognize what was happening.

That does not make you morally responsible today for what another incarnation does now. But it does disrupt the ego’s certainty that “I am this kind of person and I could never be that kind of person.” Reincarnation makes identity much larger than the present personality wants it to be, and the Twin Flame can become a direct confrontation with that uncomfortable truth.

The Pain Becomes Stranger When You Realize It Is Another You

Ordinary heartbreak is relatively easy to conceptualize. Someone else hurt me, someone else rejected me, or someone else betrayed me. The Twin Flame model creates a much stranger problem because the person doing the hurting is another incarnation of the same Soul.

That can initially make the pain feel worse, and it may even feel like some cosmic insult. You may ask, “How can my own Soul be doing this to me?” But that question still contains the assumption that Soul and personality are the same thing. They are not.

The Soul is the underlying consciousness expressed through both incarnations. The human personality is the temporary psychological structure through which that incarnation experiences the world. Your Twin Flame’s personality may not know what you know, understand what you understand, or recognize the connection at all. They may simply react through the conditioning and consciousness available to that incarnation.

That makes the situation painful, but it does not make it paradoxical. The contradiction disappears once we stop expecting the human personality to behave like omniscient Soul.

This Opens a Much Bigger Question About Karma and Dharma

Once you begin looking at your Twin Flame as another incarnation of your own Soul, the relationship stops being only about romance. It opens much larger questions about karma, dharma, responsibility, identity, and what the Soul is actually doing through incarnation.

What does karma mean across incarnations? What does responsibility mean when the same Soul moves through radically different human personalities? How does dharma operate across lives? What is the Soul trying to experience through incarnation, and what happens when two of those incarnations encounter one another during the same physical period?

Those are profound questions, but they should not be reduced to simplistic punishment logic. I am not saying your Twin Flame hurt you because you deserved it, that the universe is paying you back, or that you somehow created their behavior because you behaved badly in another lifetime. Those conclusions do not follow from the model.

The deeper point is about identity. The Soul has moved through many human expressions. Some were kind, some selfish, some courageous, some frightened, some caused suffering, and some relieved it. When the Twin Flame brings another incarnation of that same Soul directly into your present life, the encounter forces you to look at the enormous range of what human incarnation can actually be.

Compassion Does Not Require Approval

There is a form of compassion available here that is much deeper than making excuses for somebody. You can understand that your Twin Flame does not consciously know what you know, that they are reacting through a completely different human personality, that they are another incarnation of the same Soul, and that they may be responding mechanically to pressure within the system.

At the same time, you can still say that what they did was wrong, that you will not accept the treatment, and that you are setting a boundary or leaving the situation. Those positions are not contradictory. Spiritual understanding and human discernment can coexist, and in fact they should.

The purpose of spiritual understanding is not to eliminate your ability to distinguish healthy behavior from unhealthy behavior. It is to prevent the ego from reducing another human being to a simplistic story about who they ultimately are. Your Twin Flame may behave badly, but that behavior belongs to the incarnation. The Soul is larger than the behavior, and so are you.

Your Twin Flame Does Not Have to Be a Saint to Be Your Twin Flame

This may be the hardest part for some people to accept because the internet has romanticized the Twin Flame phenomenon almost beyond recognition. People imagine that because Twin Flames are the same Soul, the relationship should therefore represent the highest form of human love from the beginning.

But the actual phenomenon often looks nothing like that. The conscious Twin undergoes awakening, the responding Twin pulls away, the conscious Twin chases, the responding Twin reacts, the system becomes destabilized, and the human behavior can become painful. That is precisely why reducing Twin Flames to a romantic soulmate fantasy causes so much confusion.

The Twin Flame is not necessarily the nicest person you will ever meet. They are not necessarily the most emotionally mature, consciously spiritual, or aware that you are Twin Flames. They certainly do not need to behave perfectly in order to be another incarnation of your Soul.

Twin Flame identity is metaphysical, while human behavior is psychological and circumstantial. Those categories should not be confused. One tells you what the underlying connection is. The other tells you how a particular incarnation is currently behaving through a human personality.

What They Did Still Matters

None of this requires you to erase what happened. If your Twin Flame hurt you, it hurt. If they betrayed you, that matters. If they humiliated you, acted selfishly, or behaved cruelly, that matters. Spiritual perspective should make reality clearer, not blur it.

What changes is the interpretation. Instead of saying, “They cannot possibly be my Twin Flame because they did something terrible,” you can hold a larger view: “They are another incarnation of my Soul, and this incarnation behaved terribly.” That statement preserves both realities at the same time.

The spiritual identity remains, and the human responsibility remains. Because you are no longer forced to choose between them, the experience becomes much easier to understand. You do not have to deny the Twin Flame connection in order to condemn bad behavior, and you do not have to excuse bad behavior in order to preserve the Twin Flame connection.

You Are Not Being Asked to Approve of Everything You Have Ever Been
That may ultimately be the deepest lesson in this particular aspect of the Twin Flame phenomenon. If your Twin Flame is another incarnation of you, they may force you to confront a version of yourself you would never voluntarily identify with. You may see fear, cruelty, cowardice, selfishness, or unconsciousness that your present personality does not want to claim. You may also see courage, beauty, compassion, intelligence, tenderness, and qualities you deeply admire.

Across reincarnation, the Soul does not seem interested in maintaining one perfectly polished personality forever. It moves through human experience, and that does not mean every behavior is equally good. It means the Soul is larger than any single behavior.

Kurt Johnson’s work through New World Allstar places the Twin Flame phenomenon inside that much broader spiritual picture. Your Twin Flame can hurt you because they are not consciously relating to you as “my other incarnation.” They are living their life through the psychology of that incarnation, responding within the unified system, and often remaining completely unaware of what the conscious Twin has been forced to understand.

You can recognize that without making excuses. You can understand the mechanics without tolerating mistreatment. You can see the shared Soul without pretending the personalities are identical, and you can stop asking how your own Soul could possibly hurt you because the Soul itself is not the personality performing the behavior.

Your Twin Flame may be another incarnation of you, but you are not being asked to approve of everything you have ever been. The deeper invitation is to see just how much larger the Soul is than the single human identity you currently call “me,” while remaining fully honest about what each incarnation chooses to do within the human life it is living.
